Buffalo National River Part II

The hills and tributaries of the Buffalo River have been home to generations of mountain families.  A typical Buffalo River farm may include buildings from two centuries, while buried beneath the soil are the indicators of cultures dating back many more years.  Because many of those families married American Indians, some can boast that their roots extend back to the first settlers that shared the land with mammoths, mastodons, giant elk and saber-toothed tigers. In 1972 Congress established the Buffalo River as a National River to protect that pioneer spirit exemplified by the descendants of the river valley.
